Made from delicious fruits with a slightly sour note. Currant belongs to the gooseberry family and is a European fruit. Since the fruits are usually ripe on St. John's Day, June 24, the plants are called currants. There is red currant (Ribes rubrum) and black currant (Ribes nigrum). White currant is a cultivated form of red currant.
